Changing shopping patterns, changing store concepts and the strong surge of internet as shopping channel are examples of the challenges that retailers face, these days. Many developments take place that shape the retail landscape and retailers have a hard time coping.

Experts from the retail industry have noticed that multi-channel shopping is here to stay and it requires more agility, flexibility and a better understanding of consumer behaviour. Retailers have to adapt business processes, business models and store concepts to profit from this development.

Price Waterhouse Coopers recently published a report “Customers Take Control” that elaborates on multi-channel retailing. 86% of the European consumers are already using two channels to make a purchase. Over 25% uses four or more different sales channels to search and select their products, while the actual purchase takes place in the physical store. According this research more than 70% of the Dutch consumers will use multiple channels to shop in 2015.

Online shopping with a pc, IPad or Smartphone, with home delivery or store-pick-up is popular with consumers of all ages but differs across categories. The number of returns also differs per category, which is important information for retailers wanting to streamline their processes.

Popularity mult-channel retailing

Online shopping and multi-channel retailing are popular because products are often priced more favourably online. 24 hours a day and 7 days per week access to products and favourites is also a key factor that contributes to the surge in online shopping. Consumers want to be able to choose when and how they shop.
